The Moon Dwellers by David Estes

Goodreads
369 pages, YA Dystopian
The Dwellers #1
My rating: 4.5 stars

Synopsis

In a desperate attempt to escape destruction decades earlier, humankind was forced underground, into the depths of the earth, creating a new society called the Tri-Realms.

After her parents and sister are abducted by the Enforcers, seventeen-year-old Adele, a member of the middle-class moon dwellers, is unjustly sentenced to life in prison for her parents' crimes of treason.

Against all odds, Adele must escape from the Pen and find her family, while being hunted by a deranged, killing machine named Rivet, who works for the President. She is helped by two other inmates, Tawni and Cole, each of whom have dark secrets that are better left undiscovered. Other than her friends, the only thing she has going for her is a wicked roundhouse kick and two fists that have been well-trained for combat by her father.

At the other end of the social spectrum is Tristan, the son of the President and a sun dweller. His mother is gone. He hates his father. Backed by only his servant and best friend, Roc, he leaves his lavish lifestyle in the Sun Realm, seeking to make something good out of his troubled life.

When a war breaks out within the Tri-Realms, Tristan is thrust into the middle of a conflict that seems to mysteriously follow Adele as she seeks to find her family and uncover her parents true past.

In their world, someone must die.

My 2 cents

YA Dystopians have become my favorite genre over the past year.  There really aren't too many I haven't read yet, although there are a few.  I'm not sure why I didn't read this one sooner, I am kind of kicking myself right now!  This was a thrilling, couldn't-put-it-down kind of read!

The story is a dual POV between Adele and Tristan.   Adele is in prison through no crimes of her own.  The society is set up like a caste system, and Adele's class, The Moon Dwellers,  is  considered middle class. Although now she has no rights at all, and is in prison for life. Tristan is royalty, and at the other end of the spectrum.   He belongs to the Sun Dwellers, the richest souls in their society.  The Sun Dwellers control everything, and take away more and more from the Moon Dwellers and the Star Dwellers (lowest class) every year.  The castes are even separated geographically.  Everything is underground, after a global destructive event up above the earth.

The story starts off where Tristan is in a parade of some sorts in the Moon Dwellers districts.  Adele sees him from the prison yard, and he, her.  The both experience an extreme sort of head pain when they lock eyes.  Tristan decides he must go back and find out about this girl.  He basically runs away to go find her, against his father's wishes.  So he sets off with his best friend and servant, Roc.

Adele, meanwhile, has befriended 2 prisoners by the names of Cole and Tawni, and they make a prison break.  At the same time they are escaping, the Star Dwellers, who are upset with their lot in life, has declared war on the Moon Dwellers, and is bombing the heck out of their districts.    Its utter chaos as Adele runs to try to rescue the rest of her family, and Tristan is chasing after her.

Adele is an awesome, kick butt kind of girl, and I absolutely adored her!  Tristan was no weakling, either, as he was trained in sword fighting since he was little.  He and Roc have an interesting time of things, though, as they don't have much common sense in the Moon Dwellers districts! They get themselves in more trouble than Adele does!  I loved the friendship and brotherhood of Roc and Tristan, and I thought their moments were some of the brightest and funniest!

The bulk of the story was really about these specific groups of people, but towards the end we start to see the bigger picture of this dystopian society, and its impending doom. The ending set things up nicely for the next book, The Star Dwellers!  I can't wait to read the rest of the trilogy!

Forever My Girl Book Blast + $50 Amazon Gift Card Giveaway!

Forever My Girl

I was never supposed to be a rock star. I had my life all planned out for me. Play football in college. Go to the NFL. Marry my high school sweetheart and live happily ever after.

I broke both our hearts that day when I told her I was leaving. I was young. I made the right decision for me, but the wrong decision for us. I’ve poured my soul into my music, but I’ve never forgotten her. Her smell, her smile.

And now I’m going back.

After ten years.

I hope I can explain that after all this time.

I still want her to be my forever girl

Phantom Book Blast + $50 Amazon Gift Card Giveaway!

Phantom by Laura DeLuca

The “Phantom” was a musical phenomenon that Rebecca had always found enchanting. She had no idea that her life was about to mirror the play that was her obsession. When her high school drama club chooses “Phantom” as their annual production, Rebecca finds herself in the middle of an unlikely love triangle and the target of a sadistic stalker who uses the lines from the play as their calling card.

Rebecca lands the lead role of Christine, the opera diva, and like her character, she is torn between her two co-stars—Tom the surfer and basketball star who plays the lovable hero, and Justyn, the strangely appealing Goth who is more than realistic in the role of the tortured artist.

Almost immediately after casting, strange things start to happen both on and off the stage. Curtains fall. Mirrors are shattered. People are hurt in true phantom style. They all seem like accidents until Rebecca receives notes and phone calls that hint at something more sinister. Is Justyn bringing to life the twisted character of the phantom? Or in real life are the roles of the hero and the villain reversed? Rebecca doesn’t know who to trust, but she knows she’s running out of time as she gets closer and closer to opening night. Only when the mask is stripped away, will the twenty first century phantom finally be revealed.

Excerpt

The orchestra tuned for its virtuoso, and Justyn stood ready. But no one else was ready for the magical performance he began. Beside her, Carmen was rambling on about something mundane. Rebecca elbowed her to silence so she could listen to the perfectly thrilling tenor. As she listened to the song unfold, the world around her started to slip away. Gone was the high school auditorium. Gone were the rowdy teenagers. The Gothic stranger on the stage had become the embodiment of Erik, and Rebecca watched him in all his dark glory, belting out his tormented love through the words of his song. And she was as breathless with wonder as Christine herself must have been when the masked stranger serenaded her in the candlelit labyrinth of the opera house. In that moment, Justyn wasn’t just portraying the phantom. Justyn was the phantom.

“Let the music touch your soul.
Let the darkness make you whole.
Do not fear what is unknown.
Your true path has now been shown.
Listen to the words I sing.
Embrace the peace that night will bring.”

As he continued to sing in his deep but somehow angelic voice, Rebecca found that she couldn’t tear her eyes away from him. With every line, her heart began to beat faster.  She truly felt the arms of night wrapping her in a warm embrace. She could almost feel the hands of the phantom glide along her body as the words poured forth. The music caressed her. It possessed her—mind, body and soul. Each word left her longing, yearning for more.

She was gawking so obviously, it was hardly surprising when Justyn felt her eyes on him and steadily met her gaze. She realized her mouth was hanging open in stunned awe, and she quickly snapped it shut. His lips moved into just a small hint of a smile. He never took his eyes off her while he sang the final verse, making her cheeks flush to the point that she felt almost feverish. But it wasn’t embarrassment but excitement, arousal even, which was sending her mind spinning in so many directions.

When the song was over, and Rebecca had recovered just a hint of her composure, she couldn’t help but burst into a healthy round of applause. A few scattered people joined in, including Debbie and Carmen after she nudged them in the ribs. But only Miss King seemed to truly appreciate the brilliance of his talent as much as Rebecca did.

“That was amazing, Justyn!” the teacher gushed.

“Lord Justyn,” he corrected as he stepped down from the stage.

A few others complimented him as well, but he took in all in stride. In fact, his serious expression never faltered as he stepped down from the stage. He seemed almost bored, like it was all he could do to hold back a yawn, despite the smiles and words of encouragement.

But not everyone in the crowd was pleased as Justyn glided down the aisle, so ethereal in his dark garments that he still resonated the spirit of the Opera Ghost. Miss King might have been excited about the newest male addition to her cast after being limited for many years, but Tom and his group of boisterous companions glared at him as he passed them by.  Jay sneered and tossed a balled up piece of paper in Justyn’s direction, but the Goth was quick, and caught it in his hand without missing a beat.

“I think you dropped something,” he said.

His speaking voice was no less melodic than his singing voice, but something about his tone made Rebecca shiver. He tossed the paper back at Jay, who was nowhere near as coordinated as Justyn. He practically fell off his seat in his efforts to catch it.

“Hey vampire,” Tom called when Justyn went to walk away. “Are you sure you can handle the competition?”

Justyn smiled, a cool, sarcastic half-smile, and crossed his arms over his chest. “Are you?”

Miss King didn’t notice the short confrontation, and Justyn vanished from the auditorium as quickly and mysteriously as he had appeared. Only Rebecca had noticed the very real tension between the two boys. She wondered if it was a bad omen for them to start off the production with hard feelings and envy. That could only lead to trouble. The kind of trouble that could end with someone getting hurt.  The kind of trouble that Rebecca would do whatever it took to avoid.

Prodigy by Marie Lu

Goodreads
384 pages, YA Dystopian
Legend #2
My rating: 5 stars

Synopsis

June and Day arrive in Vegas just as the unthinkable happens: the Elector Primo dies, and his son Anden takes his place. With the Republic edging closer to chaos, the two join a group of Patriot rebels eager to help Day rescue his brother and offer passage to the Colonies. They have only one request—June and Day must assassinate the new Elector.

It’s their chance to change the nation, to give voice to a people silenced for too long.

But as June realizes this Elector is nothing like his father, she’s haunted by the choice ahead. What if Anden is a new beginning? What if revolution must be more than loss and vengeance, anger and blood—what if the Patriots are wrong?

In this highly-anticipated sequel, Lu delivers a breathtaking thriller with high stakes and cinematic action.

My 2 cents

This was a really good sequel.  I liked it just as much as Legend, which was a huge relief for me! I'll try not to give away any spoilers for Prodigy, but there will be spoilers for Legend!

Just like Legend, Prodigy is told from a dual POV between June and Day.  In this book, Day's type is black and June's is blue.  I liked June's POV better than Day's in this story.  June is just so gosh darned SMART, and she's a pleasure to read.  In Legend, I didn't enjoy her side as much because she was so in the dark on what was really going on.  Not anymore!  In fact, I think in this story, its Day that is in the dark!

June and Day throw their trust and lot with the Patriots.  The Patriots will only protect them if June and Day agree to the Patriot's new plan: assassinate the new young Elector.   June and Day agree, and are immediately split up to work the "plan."  I knew right away that separating June and Day would be a huge mistake.  Not to mention all the questions I had for the Patriots.  They really didn't have a very concise plan.   There was obviously things they weren't telling June or Day.

So June spends her time trying to get close to the Elector.  She learns lots of things in the process, and starts to wonder....is it the Elector whose bad? Or the government itself?  Day spends his time making life hell for the government...stealing food, ambushing trains, anything to make his mark and get more support from the people.  He also gets to be with Tess, but comes to find out their relationship has turned complicated.

June and Day both make some mistakes in this story, but they stay true to themselves, which I loved!  Their loyalty to each other is tested throughout the book, which made for a nail biting read!  The ending was completely unexpected for me, and I don't know how I'm going to wait a year for the next book! If you love a good dystopian, this series is amazing!

The Reece Malcom List by Amy Spalding

Goodreads
352 pages, YA Contemporary
Standalone book
My rating: 3.5 stars

Synopsis

Things I know about Reece Malcolm:

1. She graduated from New York University.
2. She lives in or near Los Angeles.
3. Since her first novel was released, she’s been on the New York Times bestseller list every week.
4. She likes strong coffee and bourbon.
5. She’s my mother.

Devan knows very little about Reece Malcolm, until the day her father dies and she’s shipped off to live with the mother she’s never met. All she has is a list of notebook entries that doesn’t add up to much.

L.A. offers a whole new world to Devan—a performing arts school allows her to pursue her passion for show choir and musicals, a new circle of friends helps to draw her out of her shell, and an intriguing boy opens up possibilities for her first love.

But then the Reece Malcolm list gets a surprising new entry. Now that Devan is so close to having it all, can she handle the possibility of losing everything?

My 2 cents

Overall, this was a really fun read!  It struck a nice balance between light and funny with a mix of teen angst and self confidence issues.  I really loved the main character, Devan.  She and her mother, Reece, were the most developed characters of the story.

So Devan has a pretty messed up life.  Her father, who was married,  had an affair with a teenager, and Devan is the result of it.  Reece, her mother, doesn't want to raise a kid, so she gives Devan to her father.  As a result, Devan feels like an unwanted child.  Her stepmother can't stand her, her father ignores her, and her mother has never tried to contact her.

Then, Devan's father dies, and Reece inherits Devan.  The story starts out with Devan on the plane to L.A, 3 months after her father's death.  She moves in with Reece and Reece's boyfriend, Brad.  Brad is the other standout character in the story.  He actually becomes one of Devan's best confidantes!

At first it seems that Devan could have all she ever wanted.  Her mother's house is spacious and gorgeous,  she is enrolled in a private fine arts school (a dream come true since all Devan loves to do is act and sing), and her mother takes her shopping for all new clothes, furniture, computer, you name it!  Devan seems to have no problem making new friends at her new school, and she is accepted into the top choirs of the school.   But none of that seems to make up for the fact that Devan doesn't think Reece can stand her at all.

The best parts of the story was the relationship between Devan and Reece.  I think the story would have been better if it had focused more on that aspect.  A good chunk of the middle of the story is about seemingly unimportant teen details with boys, clothes, and friends.  I was actually kind of bored for about 100 pages or so.  I think the author was trying to throw in things that teens like to read about, but it took away from the story arc of the mother and daughter too much for me.   I did enjoy the ending, though.  This was a nice easy contemporary read!
