Paranormal Thursday is a new feature at Rather Barefoot than Bookless

In this feature you  highlight an author and a book that you really enjoy reading from in the paranormal genre. There are so many great books out there and so many awesome authors. So this is a chance for us all to recommend some books and authors to each other that we really like.

My pick this week!

Beware of a kiss under the full moon. It will change your life forever.

Celeste Parker is used to hearing scary stories about werewolves--Legend's Run is famous for them. She's used to everything in the small town until Brandon Maddox moves to Legend's Run and Celeste finds herself immediately drawn to the handsome new student. But when, after an unnerving visit with a psychic, she encounters a pack of wolves and gorgeous, enigmatic Brandon, she must discover whether his transformation is more than legend or just a trick of the shadows in the moonlight.

Her best friends may never forgive her if she gives up her perfect boyfriend, Nash, for Brandon, who's from the wrong side of town. But she can't deny her attraction or the strong pull he has on her. Brandon may be Celeste's hero, or he may be the most dangerous creature she could encounter in the woods of Legend's Run.

Psychic predictions, generations-old secrets, a town divided, and the possibility of falling in love with a hot and heroic werewolf are the perfect formula for what happens . . . once in a full moon.

Mackenzie and Amy were best friends. Until Amy was brutally murdered.

Since then, Mac's life has been turned upside down. She is being haunted by Amy in her dreams, and an extremist group called the Trackers has come to Mac's hometown of Hemlock to hunt down Amy's killer:

A white werewolf.

Lupine syndrome--also known as the werewolf virus--is on the rise across the country. Many of the infected try to hide their symptoms, but bloodlust is not easy to control.

Wanting desperately to put an end to her nightmares, Mac decides to investigate Amy's murder herself. She discovers secrets lurking in the shadows of Hemlock, secrets about Amy's boyfriend, Jason, her good pal Kyle, and especially her late best friend. Mac is thrown into a maelstrom of violence and betrayal that puts her life at risk.

Kathleen Peacock's thrilling novel is the first in the Hemlock trilogy, a spellbinding urban fantasy series filled with provocative questions about prejudice, trust, lies, and love.

Entering is super easy--and if you help spread the word about the contest, you can also enter win a signed copy of all of their books (TEN signed books in total!)--and the book contest is open internationally!

The authors in the program are:

And they want to have an event in your home town! To participate, just got to the YA2U website and let them know what city you want them to come to. And while you're there, help spread the word about the contest and you can be entered to win all of their books--TEN signed books in total!

Here's why the YA2U Team should come to MY hometown!
So I am from a small town in Iowa--Ames, home of Iowa State University.  We never get authors to come visit us!  Occasionally, we get some that come to Des Moines, which is about an hour away, but that doesn't happen often!
Ames is a small city with a population of about 50,000.  Half of that is from the university.  We also have many outlying communities: Huxley, Nevada, Story City, Boone, and Ogden, just to name a few! There are many more!  They average about 1,000-5,000 people each, except for Boone, which has about 12,000.
We have a fabulous new chain bookstore, BAM, which recently came to down.  Other than the ISU book shop, that is the only bookstore we have in the area! (In the last 10 years, 2 other bookstores have closed.)
The city of Ames just approved renovations of our public library.  It will take 18 months to finish.  They are using the same location, but redoing everything, to get things updated. It will have a huge auditorium and other meeting rooms.  This was a vote that the public had to approve, which it did easily.  Our libraries are a big thing here! So the library is in a temporary home, an old bookstore that closed a few years ago.  I'm not sure there would be room there for an event of this size; so I'm advising that BAM would be a good place to hold the event.
Coming to our hometown would be just amazing.  Even though the town is only 50,000, the authors are easily reaching up to half a million people!  Most of them extremely  well educated!
Iowa is also the home to many, many authors, and even more aspiring authors!  Writing and literacy is a big deal here.  I'm sure everyone has heard of the Iowa Writer's Workshop?  That's just the tip of the iceberg.  A lot of high schools offer creative writing courses.  You are probably thinking, so what?  Well, most of these schools are small.  There are hardly any larger schools in Iowa, other than the large cities.  They struggle being able to offer many things that most schools in large towns can offer.  But reading and writing are always a huge priority!
It would mean so much to us, especially me, if we were the town chosen.

Why should the YA2U Team come to your hometown? Why not join in the fun today and share with others about this program and your hometown. The more votes your town gets, the closer you are to having your very own personal tour stop! Vote for YOUR town here!

And if you help spread the word, you can also participate in the book giveaway. Tell them that you learned about YA2U from me and we both get extra entries in the contest!

New Year's Bookish Resolutions for 2013

New Years Bookish Resolutions for 2013

I've seen a lot of posts today for resolutions, so I though I might make a few! First of all, I want to say how grateful I am for each and every one of my followers and fellow bloggers! This would not be any fun without other people out there to connect to!  I'm sorry I probably don't say it often enough!

Now, to the resolutions!

Reading Resolutions

  • Read 200 books this year. I feel this is a pretty good goal.  Last year, I shot for 120 books, and read 150!  So time to up it!
  • Keep up and finish all my challenges.  I signed up for several, and I'm hoping I can follow through!
  • Read more adult books.  Last year, I read almost entirely YA, which is fine.  But I missed my adult time!
  • Finish up several series I'm reading.  Vampire Academy, Sookie Stackhouse, Stephanie Plum, Rick Riordan's series, and there are several others!

Blog Resolutions

  • Try to review every full length book I've read.  I did a really horrible job of this last year.  I read 150 books, and posted 55 reviews!  I'm just sticking to full length book reviews for now.  I read a lot of short story and novella ebooks, and those are almost too short to write a review for.
  • Make my reviews more interesting.  I need to try a few new things.  Like maybe added quotes from the book.  Things like that.
  • Participate in less memes, but more blog hops. I do a lot of memes.  I've been cutting down the last month.  I will stick with the In My Mailbox for awhile.  I will continue Top Ten Tuesday and What Are You Reading Monday when I have the time.
  • Do more giveaways, and try some Book Tours.  I am participating in my first Book Tour later this month!

Personal Resolutions

  • Make some more blogger friends.  I've been blogging over 2 years, and I feel like I'm really suffering in this department!
  • Keep the Mr. more involved in my blogging processes.  I've just realized how interested my computer geek hubby is in my blogging and reading. I didn't realize I was excluding him so much!
  • Learn 5 new things this year.  I used to keep a bucket list of things I wanted to learn or do, and every year I'd try to knock 5 things off my list.  I haven't done that in at least 5 years! So now is the time to get back on it! I might even include some of my adventures in my blog!
So that's it!  Ambitious goals, but I'll be happy if I can implement them all in some small way! Go ahead and share any resolutions you may have, or share your link!

Here's to a fabulous 2013!!!

Under the Never Sky by Veronica Rossi

GoodReads
374 pages, YA Dystopian
Under the Never Sky #1
My rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars

Synopsis

Since she'd been on the outside, she'd survived an Aether storm, she'd had a knife held to her throat, and she'd seen men murdered. This was worse.

Exiled from her home, the enclosed city of Reverie, Aria knows her chances of surviving in the outer wasteland - known as The Death Shop - are slim. If the cannibals don't get her, the violent, electrified energy storms will. She's been taught that the very air she breathes can kill her. Then Aria meets an Outsider named Perry. He's wild - a savage - and her only hope of staying alive.

A hunter for his tribe in a merciless landscape, Perry views Aria as sheltered and fragile - everything he would expect from a Dweller. But he needs Aria's help too; she alone holds the key to his redemption. Opposites in nearly every way, Aria and Perry must accept each other to survive. Their unlikely alliance forges a bond that will determine the fate of all who live under the never sky.

My 2 cents

I started reading this book a long time ago.  I only read the first couple of chapters, then I think I forgot all about it!  I found it the other day on my shelf, so I decided it would be a great start to the new year by finishing it.  I'm glad I finally read it!

I love the dystopian genre, but its getting kind of hard to find new ideas.  Veronica delivered in a big way! In her world, our landscape is ravaged by horrible storms, and it appears our atmosphere has been compromised.  So most of civilization lives in pods, huge space station style ships on the surface.

Aria gets caught up in a horrible dare gone wrong, and is banished to "The Death Shop."  She probably would have died in a few days, but an Outsider by the name of Perry finds her.  He realizes pretty quickly if he can help her, she can then help him.

Aria's and Perry's relationship is the most fascinating thing about this book.  They start off with hate and mistrust, and by the end, they've fallen in love.  Its was an amazing journey to read!  I also loved Aria's transformation, from sheltered and weak to a strong, capable girl who can take care of herself!  Perry's journey was also impressive.  He starts off as kind of a selfish, mean jerk, and by the end, turns into a true hero.

The ending left a lot of things wide open.  I don't think we've come even close to learning everything about this world! I can't wait to read the sequel!  4.5 stars!
